To Go or Not to Go Herbal

Many people nowadays are turning to “organics” and “naturals” otherwise known as herbals. The rising popularity of herbal supplements has created a new fad if not a new health lifestyle. But before you join the bandwagon, here are some things you need to know about this mean, “green” dietary supplementing machine.

What is the difference between a drug and a dietary supplement?

According to the definition set by food and drug administrations in different countries, drugs are chemicals that can prevent, prolong the life, treat other effects of a health condition, improve the quality of life, and/or cure ailments and diseases, or alter the function of any part or chemicals inside the body. These drugs have approved therapeutic claims. For example, paracetamol is a drug given to bring down the body temperature in fever. Ascorbic acid is indicated for the treatment of scurvy. Iron supplements are given to treat mild cases of anemia.

Herbal supplements are not classified as drugs but as dietary supplements. The main difference is that they do not have approved therapeutic claims unlike in the case of drugs. Moreover, dietary supplements could either contain vitamins, minerals, herbals, or amino acids, all aimed to add to or supplement the diet of an individual. They are not intended to be taken alone as a substitute to any food or medicine.

Most of the manufactured medicines we now have once came from animals and plants. Through the years, chemists isolated the life-saving or life-curing components and separated them from the harmful ones. This lead to the further drug research and drug development that lead to the production of a different variety of drugs for many ailments and conditions from synthetic sources. But still we have semi-synthetic drugs, as well as drug that more or less approximate more natural composition. Since herbal supplements are made from a mixture of crude herbs reduced into powder or gel form, and later on packaged as tablets and capsules, there is a possibility that life-threatening or at least body chemistry-altering components are still present, thus the expression of concern from the medical community.

Is there a growing concern with the use of herbal supplements?

Yes. With the rising popularity of using and consuming anything herbal or organic is the proliferation of fake herbal supplements that threaten to endanger lives. If that’s the case, then why are herbal supplements given drug administration approvals? One way of ensuring the safety of the people is to have all candidate drugs, food, drinks, and dietary supplements registered with the proper authority. Otherwise, they would pose more risk with these things being sold in the black market for a hefty sum. We could ensure the quality and safety of herbal supplements if they get proper classification with the food and drug administration. Moreover, people may be able to file the proper complaints in the event a worsening of health condition is proven to be linked to the use of a particular herbal supplement.

Is using herbal supplements worth the risk?

Yes. It cannot be discounted that many who have tried herbal supplements experienced an improvement in their health—whether this is due to the herbals themselves or due to a placebo effect, as long as they do not worsen the condition of an individual, then using them is worth the risk. But of course, certain things must be considered before taking those herbal supplements:

Your doctor knows best.

First of all, clear your condition with your doctor. Ask him/her if taking a particular herbal supplement is safe given your health condition. People with heart, liver, or kidney trouble or malfunction, are usually not advised to take these, or at the minimum is to take these herbals in minimum amounts. All substances pass through the liver and kidney to be processed and filtered respectively. Kava, which is used to relieve people from stress, has been pulled out from the Canadian, Singaporean, and German markets because it contains substances that cause liver damage. Certain herbals such as Ephedra used for losing weight, contains chemicals with heart-inducing effects that can increase heart rate, which in turn can exhaust the heart and cause heart attacks in several documented cases by the American Medical Association.

Follow the directions for use.

Never take more herbal supplements than what is directed by the doctor or as instructed on the bottle. Each individual reacts differently to the components of herbal supplements. While it is perfectly safe for one individual to take in a supplement of primrose oil capsules, another person may be allergic to it. So, do not even think about downing one bottle of

It has no approved curative effect.

No matter how the product pamphlet or the label of the bottle sounds about how it has been found to be helpful in certain health conditions, these herbal supplements are not therapeutic. So do not substitute these for the medications prescribed by your doctor for the treatment of certain diseases, or for the maintenance of blood pressure, lowering of blood sugar and cholesterol, and fight off infections.

The Power of a Positive Attitude

I am going to ask you to do something very weird right now. First of all, I want you to listen to your thoughts. Now tell me, what thoughts fill your head? Would you label them as positive, or negative?

Now let’s say you are walking down the street with these thoughts. Do you think anyone who would meet you would be able to tell you what’s on your mind?

The answer to number one is up to you. But, the answer number two can be pretty generic. Although people will not be able to tell you exactly what you think, they will more or less have an idea of how you are feeling.

Here’s another question. When you enter a party filled with friends, do they all fall silent as if something terrible had happened? Or does everybody there perk up as if waiting for something exciting to happen?

You know what? The answer to all these depends on your frame of mind.

Thoughts are very powerful. They affect your general attitude. The attitude you carry reflects on your appearance, too – unless, of course, you are a great actor.

And it doesn’t end there. Your attitude can also affect people around you.

The type of attitude you carry depends on you. It can be either positive or negative.

Positive thoughts have a filling effect. They are admittedly invigorating. Plus, the people around the person carrying positive thoughts are usually energized by this type of attitude.

Negative thoughts on the other hand have a sapping effect on other people. Aside from making you look gloomy and sad, negative thoughts can turn a festive gathering into a funeral wake.

A positive attitude attracts people, while a negative attitude repels them. People tend to shy away from those who carry a negative attitude.

We can also define attitude as the way of looking at the world. If you choose to focus on the negative things in the world, more or less you have a negative attitude brewing up. However, if you choose to focus on the positive things, you are more likely carry a positive attitude.

You have much to gain from a very positive attitude. For one, studies have shown that a positive attitude promotes better health. Those with this kind of attitude also have more friends. projecting a positive attitude also helps one to handle stress and problems better than those who have a negative attitude.

A positive attitude begins with a healthy self-image. If you will love the way you are and are satisfied, confident, and self-assured, you also make others are around feel the same way.

A negative attitude, on the other hand, has, of course, an opposite effect. So, carrying a negative attitude has a twofold drawback. You feel bad about yourself, and you make others feel the same way.

If you want to have a positive attitude, you have to feature healthy thoughts. This is probably very hard to do nowadays since, all around us, the media feeds us nothing but negative thoughts. A study shows that for every 14 things a parent says to his or her child, only one is positive. This is truly a saddening thought.

If you want a healthier outlook in life, you need to think happy thoughts, and you have to hear positive things as well. So, what can you do? Well, for starters, you could see a funny movie, you could play with children, spend some time telling jokes with friends. All these activities fill you with positive stimuli, which in turn promotes positive attitude.

Although it is impossible to keep ourselves from the negative things around us, you can still carry a positive attitude by focusing on the good things, the positive things in life.

And this positive attitude you now carry can be of benefit to other people. Sometimes when other people feel down, the thing people mostly do is try to give them advice. But sometimes, all they need is somebody to sit by them, and listen to them. If you have a positive attitude you may be able to cheer them up without even having to say anything.

If positive attitude is really great, why do people choose to adopt a negative attitude instead? One who carries a negative attitude may be actually sending a signal for attention. Before you get me wrong, feeling sad, angry, or gloomy is not wrong itself. But dwelling on these thoughts for far too long is not healthy either. There is a time to mourn.

As always, if you are beset by troubles, even in your darkest hour, focus on the good things in life, you will always have hope. Problems become something you can overcome.

You do not have much to lose by adopting a healthy, positive attitude. Studies show that such an attitude actually retards aging, makes you healthier, helps you develop a better stress coping mechanism, and has a very positive effect on all the people you meet every day. So, what’s not to like about a positive attitude? Adopt one today.

Emotional Enemies Inside Your Mind

The 6 Emotional Enemies Inside Your Mind
Posted on Monday 10th, August 2015
By Master Coach
Don’t become a victim of yourself. Forget about the thief waiting in the alley—what about the thief in your mind?  What can destroy our ambitions, our fortunes, our relationships—our lives? The enemies lurking inside us, the ones we face from within, the ones we’ve got to destroy before they destroy us. There are six we must conquer:

1. Fear

We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some of our fears are brought on by our own experiences, by what someone has told us, by what we’ve read and heard about. Some fears are valid, like walking alone in a bad part of town at 2 o’clockin the morning. But once we learn to avoid that situation, we won’t need to live in fear of it.

2. Indifference

What a tragic disease indifference is. Some will say, “Ho-hum, let it slide. I’ll just drift along.” But here’s one problem with drifting: We can’t drift our way to the top of the mountain.

3. Indecision

Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal our chances for a better future. We have to take a sword to this enemy.

4. Doubt

Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. We can’t believe everything. But we also can’t let doubt take over. Many of us doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities. Worst of all, we doubt ourselves. Doubt will destroy our lives and our chances of success. It will empty both our bank accounts and our hearts. Doubt is an enemy. Go after it. Get rid of it.

5. Worry

We’ve all got to worry some—but we can’t let it conquer us. Instead, let it alarm us. Worry can be useful. If we step off the curb in New York Cityand a taxi is coming, we’ve got to worry. But we can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives us into a small corner. Here’s what we’ve got to do with our worries: Drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get us, we’ve got to get it. Whatever is pushing on us, we’ve got to push back.

6. Timidity

Over-caution is the timid approach to life. Timidity is not a virtue (unlike humility); in fact, it can be an illness. If we let it go, it’ll conquer us. If we’re timid, we won’t get promoted, we won’t advance and grow and become powerful. We’ve got to avoid over-caution.

So, we must battle with the enemy, battle with fears, build our courage to fight what’s holding us back, what’s keeping us from our goals and dreams. We have to be courageous in our lives and in our pursuit of the things we want and the people we want to become.

It’s been awhile since I have written a post, and I think it is because inspiration doesn’t have a clock.  It doesn’t know when it has been a week since your last post, although most social media these days seems to remind you constantly!  Today I want to provide a little bit of perspective to people about being real.   As I sit here developing a training that I am giving soon, I am thinking about approaching the topic of authenticity.    I am often told after a webinar, training or speaking in front of a group, “I love listening to you speak, you are so real”.  At first I never realized what the “so real” part meant. I usually brushed it off and thought maybe they said that because of the topic, maybe they can relate to my journey, or maybe it’s because I don’t have a radio voice and just sound like an average Joe, who knows!  It doesn’t matter they enjoyed it, right?

Over time I have come to realize that it is because I make mistakes!   The key is what do you do when you make a mistake.   I read an article called Humility vs Modesty that has a great perspective as to what Humility is; “It means that while we declare our strengths to others, we also remain aware of our weaknesses and acknowledge them to self and others.” This definition helped me realize that a lot of how I handle my mistakes when in front of others actually helps people to feel closer to me, and therefore pay more attention to what I am saying.  We feel compelled to be so prepared, and so polished that it becomes more about the presentation than it does about the content.   Simon Sinek shares a great exampleabout this when speaking to a room of presenters about losing his train of thought. Rather than just rolling through and playing it off, he actually used it as a point people can relate too, and created engagement.

So put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to make a mistake.  When you do make one, turn it into something fun. Relate it to your audience it will show you are real person which develops trust.  If you are looking to develop better results from your training, from your speaking or even from your one on one interactions don’t be afraid to be real.  Humility can be a valuable thing 😉

You Can Learn From Your Child

An essay by Jim Rohn titled: “4 Things You Can Learn From Your Child”, and it occurred to me how relevant it was to a successful career in an at-home business. In it he talks about the four characteristics that children possess that we “grow out of”, as we become adults. We can, however, strive to recapture these childlike behaviors and it behooves us to make the effort.

The first is curiosity. It is difficult to look back and remember it in us so, I suggest that you look at or recall your own children and what it was like. Children could never stop learning about “things” because there were always things they didn’t know about and wanted to. You, likely, remember their constant questions about the moon, the stars, where babies come from and even about God. And even though their questions made us uncomfortable at times, they never stopped asking them. Sometimes even to the point where they would take risks that we as adults would never do. “What if I pet this lion?” Frankly, you demonstrated some of that childlike curiosity when you first chose to do business from home. Did it pay off? Well, you are now operating your at-home business. Hopefully with success that will continue to offer you the opportunity for a happier, financially stable life for you and your family.

Relive some of that curiosity each day in your business and take some of those childlike risks and it will pay big dividends for you. If you are reluctant to approach someone with your business or your products, be curious and you may find you were mistaken. Or you may find that their spouse or a close friend is looking for an opportunity “just like” the one you are offering. Your curiosity led you into a revenue generating opportunity and that is exactly to what Rohn is referring and that I am attempting to relate.

The second is excitement. Is there anything more gratifying to witness than the excitement of a child? It will melt your heart AND it can grow your business. Call on your inner child and get excited. Get excited about your life, your family, your decision and your business. Get excited (and celebrate) the victories of your business and your associates, each sale or presentation, your advances and each month’s expanding check. Children, yours and mine, have no problem getting excited about a wide range of different things and that is good for their mental and even their physical health. How could excitement possibly not be good for your at-home business? The answer is excitement is the secret to building a healthy business… any business. So get excited everyday.

Children awaken and are excited about it being morning, about “what’s for breakfast?” about the dog greeting them as they get out of bed… all of these little things lead to big excitement. If you learn to get excited about the little things, like children do, getting excited about the bigger things, like the success of your business, gets a lot easier. And that excitement duplicates and gets easier and easier and the easier it becomes, the better it is for your business.

Third is faith. Children are believers. Adults grow into skeptics and, at their worst, cynics. Have you ever had the experience of being around someone or people that see every situation as a “glass half empty”? Is there anything worse? Kids are believers and what they believe is that things are going to get better and better because they have faith in the positive. That childlike faith can be an indispensable asset in your business. “I believe the next approach I make will result in making a presentation.” “I believe that my next contact will have a vision and an energy for my business.” “ I believe that I can replace my last turn-down with 3 more opportunities that really understand the quality of the products and/or the opportunity of my business model.”

I have faith in that! Only when you adopt that kind of positive mindset will you move forward without looking over your shoulder for the next “bad” thing to happen. You must believe… have faith, in the manner of a child, to keep looking ahead without any doubts about the commitment you have made and the success that is inevitable.

And finally, there is trust. Children never second-guess themselves. There is an internal trust they have in everything they hear, say and do. Adults consider this limitless trust naiveté and label it as a weakness. What that leads to is an inability to trust… in anything.  In your business, that is vulnerability because your business should be grounded on trust from the beginning. You do what you are supposed to do week after week, month after month and success happens. And it does time after time… month after month.

Your supervisor promised that he or she would be a good and available advisor. You trust that they will and in most cases, if you fulfill your promises to them, they give you the leadership that is necessary to assure your success. They have made commitments to you and your business for everything from administration to marketing to timely payment of your commissions. You trust in all these things like a child trusts that breakfast will be available each morning before school. If you are unable to trust in those things, you may have made a poor choice from the beginning.

So, observe the trust that lives in your children or, if you’re young enough, remember it in yourself and understand that it is a valuable tool in developing your business. There is no risk in trusting the people and the things that have never let you down. Children understand that, that is why they are so good at being kids. They have trust. They have faith. They have excitement. And they have curiosity.

Essential Oils Popularity

Essential oils and herbs have been used extensively for medicinal uses dating back to the ancient Egyptian times of 3500 B.C. Essential oils were used as medicine as well as in the burial rituals of rulers and pharaohs. They were also used in biblical times and referenced throughout the Bible. They were used as anointing oils, they were burned as incense to stop plagues, used as beauty treatments, and frankincense and myrrh were given as gifts to Mary after Jesus’ birth because they were known to support the immune system. Mary would have rubbed them all over him to help prevent any infection and strengthen his immune system. 2000 years ago Hippocrates (known as the founding father of modern medicine, and the Hippocratic Oath quoting “First, do no harm”) used essential oils extensively in his medical practice. Essential oils are still widely used today for their medicinal healing all over the world.

Essential Oils are extracted directly from the bark, flower, fruit, leaf, seed or root of a plant or tree. Essential Oils are created thru a process of distillation which separates the oil and water based compounds of a plant by steaming. Occasionally they are sometimes produced by cold pressed extraction. Citrus oils are most times harvested by this route as they only use the peels of citrus for the oil. Essential Oils are highly concentrated oils that have a strong aroma. This is where “Aromatherapy” comes into play. During the distillation process you are separating the most powerful healing compounds of a plant into a single oil. Here’s an example of how potent an oil can be, it takes 150 pounds of lavender to create 1 pound of lavender essential oil, in essence you are getting 150xs the healing power of lavender in that 1 pound of oil compared to using straight lavender in something. Essential oils work with your body rather than against your body if used correctly and in a safe manner.

The natural oils in plants protect them from insects, shield the plant from a harsh environment and help them adapt to their surroundings. By using essential oils you are harnessing the protective, healing powers of that particular plant.

What do you know about Essential Oils? I will be honest with you, I did not know anything at all until a couple years ago when I started seeinWhat g on social media what Essential Oils could do for you. What are they? Where do they come from? What are the benefits and how do you use them? The biggest shock to me when I began my research on Essential Oils was the cost for a tiny bottle. Are they of Therapeutic grade?  You know that really sounds impressive, technical and official doesn’t it?  Well come to find out the term “Therapeutic grade”  and another “Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade” are just marketing ploys. Made up by Essential Oil companies to sell there products.  Defining one product from another is extremely critical in marketing said product. You want it to become the “gold standard” product to market.  This was the tactic used to create the term “therapeutic grade” back in 2007. Prior to this there was no such term as “therapeutic grade” in the essential oil market.

There is no governing body as of this writing, that certifies the quality of essential oils or the standardized grading system for essential oils.

Southern California Vacation

We had a fabulous two months in Southern California this past spring.  Our son lives in a community called Temecula. We fell in love with the town and “old town”.  A great place to shop. One of the things that stood out was the lush green landscaping, flowers, street signs were visible and “so clean”.  Wine country at its best.  We visited a few of them and found the Cougar Winery to be exceptional. We visited San Diego and the waterfront district, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Malibu had a ride to remember up Mulholland Drive. That road is so twisting and curvy and certainly not a relaxing drive. Ha!

We took our son to San Fernando Valley where he was born. The hospital is still there and the home in Panorama City is still in existence.  Can not believe the change in 50 years time. Van Nuys Blvd. didn’t even look familiar. My husband graduated from Birmingham High School in Van Nuys and the school is still there. We use to treat ourselves to a Bobs Big Boy now and then and so we had to stop in Taluca Lake to have a Big Boy. They taste the same.

Visited family in Covina and Whittier also. Traveling the freeways out there are different than here in the Twin Cities.  At times we were standing still! One thing I have to mention is the motorcycles traveling between the car lanes. I couldn’t believe it and it is legal.

It was a good trip and we plan to go again next year.

Life is good!
